Review session #2: The Fault in Our Stars

WARNING: The post contains SPOILERS!

Finally I'm done with the decade's most painful book & movie (aka. TFIOS)!

I'm pretty sure I'm late but I really wanted to see the movie in the cinema, however some kind of a**hole decided not to air it in our county's biggest movie distributor (or i'm not sure what's the name of it). But, a week or so ago my cousin found out that they do air it in the city but in a smaller theater. Tho it was already late.

That's why (and also boredom played a big role too) 2 or 3 days ago I decided I will read that effing book, even if my eyes will melt off (I don't have it in physical copy, and my eyes hate computer screen if it's about book reading).

The book:

was AWESOME! I thought the movie will have bigger impact on me, but weirdly I was mistaken.

First of all let me tell you, when I finished the book, I felt so guilty and shameful of myself. Everyone who read it/saw it said it will make you cry.

I managed to finish the book without a single teardrop.

I'm not a stonehearted person, what's more there were so many parts where I literally felt like my heart fell into a million pieces - it just did not came out in tears. Everyone suffers differently, right? So that's how I handled it, silently in myself, but believe it or not I felt such a huge sadness at some parts...I assume most of the people who read TFIOS did.

The beginning of the book reminded me to one of my friends. And I was surprised! I saw the trailer first and judging from that and Shailene's kind look(?) I never thought the book will have a start like that.

Then, I was surprised again, since the book had such funny turns at such weird times. To be honest, I'm so happy that it has those turns and it's not just a regular depressing, let's-cry-over-a-joyless book.

Tho the ending is just...hard. Let me express my hatred towards "computer reading". I felt like I would be running towards to the end of a tunnel, not being able to reach it. I kept eating up the pages but I felt I would never reach the end. (I think John Green's hands are in it too. The last 3-4 chapters were pulled out a bit.)

However that "pull out-ness" was definitely balanced with the last two pages of the story. It was a perfect close in my opinion. :)

The movie:

I was a bit disappointed. Not because I wasn't satisfied with the match of the actors/actresses with the looks I've imagined them - oooh no. They couldn't find better Hazel and Augustus even if they search for 1000 more years. (side note*fangirling*: I was absolutely melted when I saw Ansel as Gus- aaaabsolute perfection  *u*).

What set me off was the supporting characters' acting. Eg.: Laura Dern. I was totally fine with her until the moment when Hazel's mom told her she(the mom) was studying- i felt it was kind of a big moment in the book and what I got from the movie wasn't satisfying. The other person was Lotte Verbeek. In the book Lidewij gets totally upset & quits her job. From the movie we don't know if she quits or not but I'm definitely sure she did not give a big sign of 'upsetment'. Sure, she calls Van Houten's name, but -for me- it didn't sound angry, sorrowful at all.

I had no problems with the story line. As it happens with most of the book based movies, many scenes were not included, but I didn't feel it as a problem. It made the story more put-together.

I think I have a thing for movie endings: I mentioned in my The perks of being a wallflower review that moment too & I want to highlight this part of this movie as well. The last scenes gave a heartwarming, moving all in all perfect ending to the film adoption. (Then again, I think the closing scene is one of the most important parts so it has to be really well done, doesn't it?)

To sum up: I was satisfied with both works. Also - I know they probably won't see, but- I would like to congratulate to Shailene Woodley & Ansel Elgort for giving such a great performance.

Also Kate, if you read this I'm really sorry, but I couldn't wait 'til Monday, so I watched it by myself. >.< The good news is now you can comfortably read the book then watch the movie. :D

Write to you soon,

Flora xoxo ♥
